Common Christianity Misconception #2: Christianity is just a list of rules, mostly about sex and drinkingThe short answer is no, although you should still follow the rules!Jesus was explicit: all of the commandments Christians follow hang on loving God and loving your neighbour (Matthew 22:37-40). That is what the rules are about, full stop. We were given them because, in our natural state, we do not love properly. Human beings have a bad habit of being cruel, self-centred, and self-deluding. Because of this, God gave us the law not as a rulebook but as doctor's orders, meant to help us get better.Yes, you should avoid drinking to excess, not because drinking is bad, but because it makes it harder to love your neighbour. Yes, you should avoid sex outside of marriage, not because sex is bad, but because love is most fully expressed in a lifelong, marriage relationship between a man and a woman. But the point has never been to follow rules for their own sake. As far back as Moses, the end goal has been clear: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and might, and love your neighbour as yourself. (Deuteronomy 6)
