I left New York at eighteen with a lot in shambles. Now I'm going back, and I don't know what it will do to me.The last time we crossed that border, Samuel was one. We were in Baker Lake, Nunavut, and I was the deacon in charge of St. Aidan's. We didn't know much about ministry or about being parents. But we knew what we knew, and we stood where we stood.I walked into those old streets the way you walk into a dream. The smells of my childhood were there, and familiar faces, older now. None of it touched me. When we left, I didn't think twice about when I'd see them again.New York is home, and it isn't. I grew up there. I became a grown-up in Germany and then in Nunavut. Up here I've met so many Newfoundlanders who've spent their lives in the North and still go home to Newfoundland. They never wonder where home is. I do.This time I'm walking back as a priest and a husband, father of two boys with a third on the way. Isabelle and I have given our lives to this calling. I'm not a better or worse person than the kid who left. I'm far from the same person.And that kid left a mess. Friends got hurt and people got wounded. There was teenage foolishness I never cleaned up, forgiveness I never asked for, and forgiveness I never gave.Jacob knew that road. Twenty years after he cheated his brother, he headed home. The night before he met Esau, he didn't sleep. He wrestled until daybreak and walked away limping.Most of us have a place like that. A town, a family, a group of friends we walked out on with things left undone. Your mind files it away. Your body remembers.
